Blind patriotism became especially popular after events like September 11th. It seems like not enough Americans want to do this though, because nowadays patriotism seems very selective and only applies when convenient for those who choose to use their patriotism as a weapon instead of an ideal.

This is not what patriotism looks like; rather, true patriots always question their government’s motives, no matter how brutal or bloody things might be in response. True patriots fight and use the US Constitution & Bill of Rights lawfully in their favor. The 1st Amendment is the right to free speech & expression. We teach patriotism to our young ones from an early age. They wave the American flag on national holidays such as 4th of July, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day and Labor Day.

Choosing between a USA flag or another flag may be difficult for some Americans . Maybe, as a nation, we may need to trade patriotism for all Americans as time goes by. In fact patriotism is common throughout the world except in some countries where patriotism is considered a crime or treason against their leader or country.

In the USA, patriotism is not taught enough, so younger generations have forgotten patriotism and flag etiquette. To them, a flag should be retired and/or used as a dress accessory. But many still love their country and respect people who served their country as brave patriots.

Patriotism means different things to different people at different times, but a majority of Americans consider patriotism to be an undying devotion to one’s country, with admiration of or devotion to their own native land (America), especially when it is treated with contempt or too often taken for granted. However, we want our kids to follow their dreams and make positive contributions to society, so we encourage them to vote for the best person on election day, even if it’s neither candidate we prefer.

Flag etiquette was taught to us as children but, over time, many have forgotten how to properly display Old Glory. On the 4th of July, everyone is patriotic. But only those true Patriots fly flags and banners year round.

 That being said, sometimes our patients run into problems or experience discomfort at a time when we can’t see them right away. We wanted to equip our orthodontic patients with some tricks and hacks that you can do at home, so you can ease discomfort and keep treatment on track until you are able to visit our office.

Invisalign Emergency #1: Sharp Aligners

Discomfort and irritation can occur on your gums and cheeks if your aligners have a slightly sharp or jagged piece of plastic or acrylic along the border. To fix minor sharp spots on your aligners, you can use a clean nail file.

 Take the nail file and smooth over the sharp spot just a little — don’t get too carried away filing your aligners or you could distort their shape and make the aligners less effective. If you have developed a sore inside your mouth from your aligners, rinse the area with warm salt water to clean the sore and prevent it from getting worse.\

 Invisalign Emergency #2: Cracked Aligners

Minor cracks in your aligners are usually no big deal, and you should continue wearing them as prescribed. However, It is important to handle the aligner carefully so the crack doesn’t get worse. Gently remove the cracked aligner(s) from the opposite side of the crack.

Invisalign Emergency #3: Broken Attachments/Buttons

In some cases, the attachments on your teeth can break or fall off. These attachments work like handlebars, helping the aligners move your teeth. This typically doesn’t make for an orthodontic emergency, and you should keep wearing your aligners. We can fix the broken attachment at your next appointment.

Invisalign Emergency #4: Stained Aligners

Again, not exactly an emergency, but stained aligners can present cosmetic issues and unwanted discoloration in your mouth. If your aligners are stained, it will look like your teeth are stained.

To avoid stained aligners, take out your trays when eating or drinking anything that could stain your teeth and aligners, such as:

• Coffee
• Wine
• Curry & other colorful spices

Rinse your mouth and/or brush your teeth before putting your aligners back on. You can also use a retainer cleaner (M3 makes a good one) to clean and disinfect your aligners.

Conflicts and Bullying

It’s normal to have conflicts inside the workplace. 

In a place where professionals are gathered and everyone has their own personalities, conflicts are bound to happen. Some are healthy and some are not. 

Bullying in the workplace is a pressing matter. The burden of dealing with regular abuse on top of grinding for your career can be a lot to handle. 

These incidents are unhealthy and damaging, not only to the subjects of aggression themselves but to the whole organization.

Organizational Conflicts That Can Cause Bullying

Discrimination. Age, sex, religion, color, are among the qualities that cause conflict in the workplace. A person or a group of people having prejudice on a co-worker is one of the common causes of discriminatory behavior. 

Offensive jokes, physical attacks and ostracization are the common ways bullies employ to agonize their victims.

Work Mistakes. Friction arising from simple mistakes can cause repeated ill-treatment. 

In a work environment where your jobs can directly or indirectly affect another, your mistakes can be seen as an unnecessary bother. 

As petty as it sounds, if you cause such inconvenience for them, they can bully you as reparations.

Different Work Styles and Values. Having different personalities in the workplace is vital to maintain a healthy environment where people can grow. Clashing due to these differences happens all the time. 

What causes trouble is when the differences result in a deep feeling of hatred. While wanting to assert a position, intention is sometimes misplaced and transforms to regular offensive behavior.

Departmental Conflicts. Bullies feel stronger in a group. Tension between departments can make a probable excuse to attack a person not belonging to the same team. 

New Hires. Whether the new hire is a superior or an entry level employee, having someone join an already established organization can cause changes in power dynamics. 

These changes cause aggressive tendencies for people looking to protect their position and those wanting to push it.

Changes in the Organization. This conflict does not happen between people but is caused by changes within the company itself 

Examples would be mergers, lay-offs, budget cuts and performance based evaluations. These changes might sound unrelated but studies show that organizational changes indirectly affects the chances of bullying cases.

When such changes arise, stressors increase. Change in the workplace often gives a negative connotation to people so they react and act more negatively than normal.
